Brakes
Your vehicle’s brake system is the most critical safety system and you should have it checked out immediately if you suspect there are any problems. A properly functioning braking system ensures the control of your vehicle under a wide variety of conditions. Your braking system consists of front and rear brakes with the front brakes doing most of the stopping. Other parts of the braking system include a master cylinder, slave cylinder, rotors, brake pads, calipers, reservoir, brake hose and more.
Symptoms
Your vehicle should have a brake warning indicator in the dash, this is the most common indicator you have a braking system issue. Squealing, squeaking or grinding noises coming from the brakes this is another sure sign there is an issue. If you hear a high pitched noise that stops when you apply the brakes that is most likely a brake pad wearing issue. Grinding when you apply the brakes may be an indication that the pads are worn though. Wobbling, vibration or scraping when stopping may be an indication that the rotor need to be replaced.
Additional Symptoms
Spongy or soft brake pedal, when it feels softer or sinks to the floor mat when you press the brake pedal could indicate an issue with the master cylinder. If the vehicle pulls to one side when braking this could be caused by a caliper problem. Burning smell when you are driving could be a sign of an overheated brakes or clutch, if there is smoke coming from the wheel area this could also be a stuck brake caliper.
